Deferring to Major General Gas-

coigne's de: patch No.225 of the 18th. May, I have the honour to inform you that the need of increasing the

Water supply in the Kowloon Peninsula has become more

urgent since Major General Gascoigne addressed you, OTH

ing to the large increases in the number of troops that

have been sent here. A large proportion of these troops

are stationed in the Peninsula and difficulty has already

arisen in providing them and the ever increasing popula-

tion with a constant supply of water.

I have made provision in the Estim-

ates for next year for $100,000 to enable the first of

the works recommended in Mr. Gibbs' report to be procced-

ed with, and I would ask you to be good enough to has-

ten Mr. Chadrick in his consideration of the project.

have

I have also to state that a special overseer with exper-

ience in masonry work will be required to immediately

supervise the work, and as soon as the work shall, received

your approval I shall ask that one be engaged in England

and sent out.

The Right onourable,

JOSEPH CHAMBERLAIN, M.P.

&C.,

80..

I have the honour to be,

Sir,

Your most obedient,

umble servant,

Henry Atlan

GOVERNOR, &C.
